Queer Graphic Design

Embroidery inspired by the art of the LGBT+ rights movement

I plan to embroider eight patches for four different time periods in LGBT+ history in order to remind other young, queer artists that LGBT+ people have a rich, creative, and powerful history. I will design the patches based on influential buttons, patches, posters, and other forms of graphic design that played a part in the fight for LGBT+ rights. The time periods that the patches will be inspired by are the Pride parades of the 1970s and the Pride parades of the 1980s, drawing primarily from buttons worn during the events, artwork from the HIV/AIDS epidemic, drawing primarily from artist Keith Haring and The Quilt, and finally, the modern era of activism, focusing on breaking the gender binary and modern graphic design.
